Josh and Autumn Miller

Josh and Autumn Miller

sent out by Grace Brethren Church of Orrville, Ohio to plant churches among the Pano people

That title might sound a bit melodramatic, but honestly, it is completely true!

This isn’t our usual update. We want to share with you a couple of needs that have a significant impact on us and our future work in Pano.

(Hopefully you watched the video in our last update where we announced that we are going to the Pano people group! If not, CLICK HERE to watch it.) We’re so excited that God has provided the direction and clarity about which people we should serve. But before we can go, there are a couple of things that need to happen.

Hence, this appeal for a co-worker…or two.

Do you know anyone interested in coming to PNG for 2-5 years to provide administrative help, do supply buying, and give practical support to church planting teams?

Right now, there’s a very important position that needs to be filled within Finisterre Vision, the organization the assists us and allows us to be here in PNG legally. The Logistics Coordinator (LC for short) is in charge of keeping things running on the ground here in PNG.

  • What happens when those of us in remote locations need food or ministry supplies sent out from town?
  • What about overseeing getting emergency help to us if we’re injured “in the bush?”
  • Who files paperwork to make sure that all of us missionaries can remain legally in country and have good relationships with the government officials?
The answer to all those questions (and many more) is the LC!
This position is really vital to the success of all of us who serve on church planting teams.
Currently, we don’t have a permanent Logistics coordinator. Our teammate Craig took over the position temporarily this year, since the family who had been doing an awesome job filling this role for the past 5 years returned home to the USA to take over another position with the organization. Since Josh and I finished learning the national language in August, we’ve been helping Craig with the responsibilities of this position. While Craig (and now us) have been happy to fill this role temporarily, this isn’t the role God has called us to permanently. We’re ready to move on and begin house building and moving into Pano to begin our ministry there.

There is someone who is trying to come in January to temporarily fill this position until next October. But after that? We don’t know.

We urgently need God to provide the right individual to fill this role long term (2-5 years)!

Would you be willing to pray for God to provide a Logistic Coordinator? More specifically, would you be willing to pray if he is calling you to fill the position…or if you know someone who might be a good fit for this role with whom you should share this need?

We’re praying for someone who has a heart for reaching the unreached, some organization skills that they are willing to grow/use, and someone who is willing to be stretched and learn new skills along the way.
Most of all, we’re praying for someone willing to be used by God to provide the practical support needed for this church planting mission to continue!
The LC purchases, packs, weighs, and ships supplies to the teams in remote locations!
Purchasing the needed supplies can be interesting when you never really know what the stores will have in stock on any particular day.
The LC lives in Madang, a coastal city that’s super beautiful from the air…
…although a little less beautiful at some points on the ground.
Still, the beautiful coastal reef gives stunning views of God’s creation here in “the Land of the Unexpected.”
We believe that God has been preparing someone to fill this role, so for now, we need your help spreading the word about the need!

As you know, before we move into Pano, we have to build houses so we can live there. Our plan has always been to have building teams come from the US to assist us in building. While this is still our desire, it looks like we’ll probably have to start the building process without much help, due to COVID and the difficulty of getting individuals into PNG, plus the complications of the time needed to quarantine.

There are 2 young men willing to come for 5-6 months to help us, and we’re working really hard to get the approval needed for them to come. Please pray with us for them to have the financial support and government approval to be able to come help us!

We’re also trying to do whatever we can to get things in place for other building teams to come down the road if government regulations change and allow that in the future.

Interested in using your construction experience to help us build our houses here in PNG?
If you having building experience and want more information about possibly serving on a building team sometime next summer to help us build our houses (if government regulations will allow us to get people in country by then), let us know and also check out this post “Wanna Pay Money to Suffer?” from our co-worker, Craig for more details.
This isn’t exactly what our houses will look like, but it gives you an idea of the type of house we’ll be building.
And here’s another example.
Most house builds here in PNG involve large build teams who come in for a couple weeks at a time to help speed up the process of building. We had planned for this as well, but we’re holding those plans loosely right now, in light of government COVID-related restrictions.

I’ll be honest, at times, we have struggled with discouragement at the thought of not having any outside help with building our team’s three houses. Building alone feels daunting and will significantly extend our building time, which delays us starting into learning the Pano language.

But when we’re discouraged, it’s because we’re looking at things from our own point of view.

“So be truly glad. There is wonderful joy ahead, even though you must endure many trials for a little while. These trials will show that your faith is genuine. it is being tested as fire tests and purifies gold-though your faith is far more precious than mere gold. So when your faith remains strong through many trials, it will bring you much praise and glory and honor on the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.”                                                                                                   1 Peter 1:6-7

While this atypical year has caught many of us off-guard, we rest assured that our God hasn’t been surprised by anything, including COVID and the delays/difficulties that have come with it.

And while these changes to our timelines can feel upsetting from our human point of view, we believe and trust that God is using them to purify our faith, and build perseverance and maturity that we’ll need for the difficult times in ministry that are coming.

Ultimately, we are trusting Him to provide the right person to fill the LC position and to provide the help we need in order to build our houses, to enable us to do the work He’s called us to do among the Pano people.

Thank you for praying with us, supporting us, and spreading the word about these needs!
